“If form follows function… this is the other side of the coin toss!”©

[This is a follow-up to this article, found here.]

If one was to consider form and function first, of the actions we have seen by Colin Kaepernick, does he truly deserve to be honored- if it was done from ignorance? What I mean here is not a racist statement… not an endorsement to disrespecting our National Anthem… not a viewpoint without concern for America as a whole- or even ‘a game’ many Americans watch on Thursday, Monday or Sunday.

When one considers historical the request to stand… during the National Anthem, the very suggestion for it becomes an expected tradition. When this expectation is not honored is when it appears there is a slight to our traditions, the things we gain value from or the values we see as being honorable in and of themselves. This actually begs the question, is it then an expected formality, having form and appearance, or a gesture in accordance with conventional norms of etiquette? Variation to what is currently under such scrutiny (today) is due to the uproar or approval of the action taken by Colin Kaepernick. To see ’taking a knee’ as racist is stupidity; whereas it becomes a racist statement if a raised fist is used (no different than a raised open hand) and not before. I say it is done in ignorance though if… if we remain ignorant to what history has shown us, and that would be to deny the veracity of the strength of reason for what we do.

We get the term ‘uncouth’ from England, this comes from being ‘unknown’ to either present company or to the appearance of things done by someone not from the area- being unexperienced with the customs. This is also called ignorance… or of being ignorant1️⃣ to local traditions, actions taken when people encounter one another in a province, district or locale. This same ignorance to history can apply to social gestures, speech or actions we might consider couth (known and commonplace), take the thumb’s up for example- a sign we take to mean we agree or it’s OK with how we perceive it to be.

1… Ignorant: lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uninformed or unaware. Latin ignorant-’not knowing.’

In Rome when the Emperor displayed his thumb (in the arena) it meant anything but OK… it meant death, or a death sentence for one of the participants. Life was given a signal when the thumb was concealed within the hand, meaning… don’t pull the weapon to use it- keep it in the sheath. From Discover magazine… a brief abstract is found below, an article regarding the thumb and the meaning of its use, called,”Thumb and Thumber”.

But according to Morris, the thumb gesture indicating that a gladiator should be offered mercy or a lucrative deal endorsing Roman Meal Bread was pollice compresso, compressed thumb–that is, covered up, or tucked out of sight. What spectators in fact did was extend their thumbs for a kill and hide their thumbs for an acquittal, writes Morris. This made sense in an arena as vast as the Colosseum, where the kill and no-kill signals would have to be strongly contrasting to be visible at all.

Here is the phrase in Latin: pollice compresso favor ludicabatur [meaning: goodwill decided by compressed thumb]… Life was spared by a tucked thumb inside the fist, making it look like a weapon inside the sheath. A thumb up meant make your weapon look like the thumb, unsheathed. A turned thumb up… sideways, pollice verso, probably meant to use the weapon judiciously- take the life of the Gladiator.

At first Colin Kaepernick sat down to protest, reported by Steve Wyche, NFL Media reporter, Aug. 27, 2016, in Santa Clara, California. According to Steve Wyche, Kaepernick was showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement. See the article here. What followed was The 49er Statement, seen below…

“The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony. It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem.”

The NFL also released a Statement, one obtained by NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport:

“Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the national anthem.”

To fully understand this is to peel back the layers to its beginning, taking a knee, an article on it by Eric Reid, one posted in The New York Times, Sept. 25, 2017. See two brief abstracts below…

That’s when my faith moved me to take action. I looked to James 2:17, which states, “Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” I knew I needed to stand up for what is right.

But to quote the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “A time comes when silence is betrayal.” And I choose not to betray those who are being oppressed.

To fully decide for yourselves if actions taken were done from ignorance, as it comes to kneeling, we must learn what is meant by kneeling in the first place.

Knee; Kneel

Can it be, there was a reason for kneeling… or taking the knee, and it is not disrespectful but a form of supplication to what the Anthem, flag and song embody. Look below to what has been foretold all of us (alive) will do when Jesus returns.

Romans 14:11 KJV
http://www.biblestudytools.com/kjv/romans/14-11.html
11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

So I ask you, my fellow Americans, was this done in ignorance… I’d think not! Let us not be so rash to decide so quickly, provoking a knee-jerk reaction or so swift in the judgement we ourselves may be in store for in the days ahead. Now is the time we will need the support of each and everyone that calls themselves American… and we need to kneel to God in prayer for the strength to endure sure prophecy that comes upon us all.

P.S. This is where I lost my sight, on the Black Lives Matter movement, but it does not: remove or lessen the importance to wrongs by some in our society, call for anything being sound reason for its destruction (to remove statues perceived as something being racist) if it would diminish the reason for the strength we’ve gain by overcoming it, or to mean we should not look to find we (truly) have more in common than we do not!

Is he a hero or an embarrassment? When MLK Jr. took a knee it was to pray!

The protests started by the Quarterback, under President Obama, continue but ‘slavery itself‘ is being overlooked or not discussed-WHY?

Do people pay to go the ballet… when politics come into play on the stage? Do you go to Disneyland on the Fourth of July… expecting to see a Russian flag? Most people go to sporting events to see sports but if it continues as it is… when even Jerry Jones goes back on the words he said in the past, the NFL will be,”Not Frickin’ Looking”, and I won’t be the only American thinking this!

Here is what John Elway came out and said, below an abstract…

“Fans just want to watch and enjoy the sport without it being politicized.”

Can it be any plainer than this?

“The point of philosophy (today) fails us to inspire amelioration or grant fulfillment 2*”©

(*… 1 is from a contemporary perspective, narrative, 2 will be a blend of politics and religiousness, 3 has to do with philology [thoughts on thinking… and the use of philosophy] and current events [the Las Vegas shooting], and 4 will be limited to a Christian perspective only.)

Philosophy and philosophers the world over throughout history have offered up a manner of thinking to live a life inclusive to improvement (concerned with life itself). If this was remotely true, reasoning would become more prominent in all our lives… and efforts to become more reasonable, exercising soundness in practice and application to our lives, should be seen more frequently. This is not the case here in the world we live in today! The biggest issue is is discernment being used, and what axis does it pivot from or turn toward? Is it God centered or mankind oriented… and to what end or goal is the thought then to concentrate on?

As an example, most of ’Social Media’ is against what Trump said in his UN speech. I happen to know one group that was exceptionally proud of Trump… and sees it as a means of renewed American pride- read more here. There is a large group of people that do not see it this way, covered by a Christian Science Monitor article here. In today’s world we have many referring to,”By any means necessary”, and it has become a means to an end but I ask,”The end of what?” The end of reasoning (diplomacy or logical discussion) is quickly upon us when people would rather resort to violence as a means to: gain your attention, command your actions from what you were doing… now forced to react to them, to cause dissension and terrorize, or to comply with religious dogma/doctrine… and to do such a thing without regard for the safety of people in the way.

I can remember something I thought was peculiar at the time I heard it. Strangely enough, it was something heard at the funeral for Mohammad Ali, spoken by Ambassador Attallah Shabazz, Malcolm X’s daughter. You can read her words here, and see a brief abstract below…

“My dad would often state when concluding or parting from one another: “May we meet again in the light of understanding.” And I say to you with the light of that compass, by any means necessary.”

Curiously, it is ‘Antifa’ that relies on local groups like ‘By Any Means Necessary (BAMN)’ to engage people in direct action. The influence and connections by nexus of Russian thought and Muslim extremists is unlike any coalition seen by humanity before. See one disturbing (at least it should be) video at this link (or below), a documentary called,”Soviet Islam”, is viewable at that site (or here).

ab inconvenienti… Latin for ‘from an inconvenient thing’. An argumentum ab inconvenienti is one based on the difficulties involved in pursuing a line of reasoning, and thus a form of appeal to consequences. The phrase refers to the legal principle that an argument from inconvenience has great weight.

When it comes to what philosophy has given us, the thoughts used to state a belief in support of what we might align ourselves with or to, just what is it “Philosophy” has given us but support for pluralism- a way traveled to be farther from God than mankind was ever meant to be.

What good did it do for philosophers to point out things humanity needs, as in past history, when ‘Absurdists’ would mock what prevails in thought or thinking it laughable today? Morals spoken of by Plato and defined by Aristotle now openly mocked, despised or denied credibility or validity; which actually speaks more to the perceptions used than the reality seen on the horizon of humanity. To parse words, actions or expectations about the affect of our own actions and deny the effects on our reality is to literally stick your head in the sands… a variation to,”I will see it only as I want to… or am willing to- or it doesn’t exist”.  An example of such a thing, politically, is just below…

If unwillingness is part the current position philosophers are advocating, in their philosophy of choice (Du jour), we will definitely see more absurdity in present life abounding… being lauded after as a reasonable expectation. All this does is make it that much more absurd and the masses are buying in and stocking up! To hell with the Greeks… give us Caligula! When perceptions can be honed to laser accuracy but dull to discount or slight the panoply of the peripheral or panoramic view we need to live a life inclusive to improvement (concerned with life itself)- we’d squander the opportunity to change the viewpoints we have grown to suffer with and become unfamiliar with regard or foresight (conditioned by/inured) to the damage it can cause.

Is this to be the future viewpoint of ‘LinkedIn’ as well?

The cartoon comes from this site… https://www.cartoonmovement.com/cartoon/37366 [the cartoonist is Amorim, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil] as we might festoon a cartoon to lampoon absurdity, by showing absurdity for what it has become to the perception of some.
